Setup

The game server runs on a single Ubuntu server. It started as a Minecraft BungeeCord network run directly with the itzg/minecraft-server Docker image. That worked well, but it had one main drawback: anyone who wanted to configure or run the servers had to be comfortable with the Ubuntu CLI, Docker and how the itzg image works.

To make the servers manageable without shell access, we moved to Pterodactyl, a web panel for starting, stopping and configuring game servers. The panel stores its data in MySQL and sends commands to Wings, a daemon on the server that runs each game server in its own Docker container. We built it on a new Ubuntu server on the same physical host, so the existing network stayed online while the panel was set up and tuned.

The panel is reached through a Cloudflare Tunnel, which encrypts traffic and avoids opening any ports to the internet. The tunnel also supports single sign-on through providers such as Microsoft Entra ID, where the organisation's users are managed. We initially relied on Pterodactyl's own user accounts, and SSO through Entra ID was added later
